What started as a few small jobs in 2008 grew into something bigger — a company built around quality work, honest communication, and doing things the right way. For nearly 20 years, we’ve helped homeowners across Blaine, Coon Rapids, Anoka, Andover, and the north metro restore, renovate, and improve their homes. How We Got Here
Innovative Building & Design was founded in 2008 — a time when both Justin and Joe were at a turning point professionally. Justin had always wanted to build something of his own. Joe had spent years managing large commercial construction projects — Home Depots, banks, schools, assisted living facilities — and was ready to bring that experience closer to home. They knew they worked well together, and they knew they could build a company that did things differently.
What started as a few small jobs grew into something more. Over the years, IBD became the company Blaine homeowners call when it matters — after a storm, before a big renovation, or when a previous contractor left them with a mess to clean up. We’ve been brought in to fix more than a few of those situations over the years. It reinforced something we already believed: doing things right from the start is always worth it.
The approach has stayed the same since day one. Be honest. Help homeowners make smart decisions. Look for ways to control costs without sacrificing quality. If something doesn’t make sense, say so. If there’s a better option, walk them through it. We’re not just here to complete a job — we’re here to help you get the best result for your home.
What That Looks Like in Practice
Most contractors are either solo operators with no backup plan or large national outfits where you’re just a number. IBD sits in a different place — small enough that Justin or Joe knows your name, large enough to have W-2 carpenters and skilled tradespeople on staff year-round (not subcontracted day labor).
We’ve also been fortunate to build a team that shares the same values. Everyone at IBD — from the project managers to the crew on your roof — takes pride in their work and cares about how the customer feels at the end of the job. That’s not something you can manufacture. It comes from the top and it runs through everything we do.

Justin Kahmann
Justin grew up in Fridley and always knew he’d build something of his own. When he and Joe co-founded IBD in 2008, he brought the business instincts — sales, development, operations, and the financial discipline that keeps a company running for nearly 20 years. He still gets his hands dirty when the job calls for it, but mostly he’s focused on making sure the right people are on the right jobs and that every customer feels taken care of from first call to final walkthrough. Outside of IBD, Justin also owns Prodigy Martial Arts MN in Blaine.
Joe Hansmann
Joe holds a Construction Management degree from the University of Minnesota. Before co-founding IBD, he managed large-scale commercial projects — Home Depots, banks, schools, assisted living facilities. He came to residential work with a level of process discipline that most homeowners never see in a contractor, and he’s brought it to every IBD job since 2008. Joe is on site. Not occasionally — every job. That’s the standard he set at the start, and it hasn’t changed.
